John White letter book, 1859 Oct 25 - 1863 March.

Letterbook, 25 Oct. 1859 - 12 Mar. 1863, containing verbatim copies of outgoing business correspondence from John White (1807-188u) of Abbeville, S.C.; letters discuss cotton sales, orders for household goods and provisions, and banking issues and financial transactions. Other letters indicate that White executed deeds and sold cotton on behalf of Confederate soldiers, as referenced in his letter of 16 Aug. 1862 to J.L.K Bennett, "at the request of Mr. John Cromer who is in the Confederate army in Virginia, I have sold his crop of cotton which he subscribed to the Confederate Government." White asks that Bennett send him Confederate Bonds as payment for Cromer's cotton. There is a gap in correspondence between 19 Oct. 1861 and 14 Apr. 1862, when entries resume with a letter from White requesting a subscription to the tri-weekly Mercury Newspaper. Furthermore, in various recorded letters White records the selling of cotton for members of the Confederate Army. White was also involved in the selling of property on behalf of William Budd, Esq., for which White received a commission.
